Ninja Standing Desk – Field Testing and Final Manufacturing

I’ve been closely following the progress at the two sewing houses and things are going great!

One of the exciting parts of manufacturing in the USA is that I was able to get EXACTLY the quality and specifications I wanted for the desks. A really interesting specification was how tight the fabric wraps the inserts. If it is too loose the desk can actually twist, if it is too tight the poles become hard to disconnect for disassembly. However I feel a bit like Goldilocks and found a fit that was “Just Right!”

Everything is finely tuned and each sewing house is in the middle of production and have assured me they will be done by the beginning of December.

There isn’t much left for me to be hands on with the manufacturing so instead of twiddling my thumbs waiting for the production run to complete I’ve decided to do some field testing!

I’ll be working from the road doing market research, field trials, and of course having fun, in Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, and South Korea until the end of November.

I will still be available and working remotely on coordinating everything to be ready to ship out in the beginning of December as soon as the desks come back from the sewing house!

25 days with a small pack and my Ninja Standing Desk! Be sure to go Like the Ninja Standing Desk Facebook Page for more updates and pictures of the Ninja Standing Desk in action.

There is only a limited amount of additional desks being made for the December shipment, Pre-Order Today to be sure to get one by Christmas!

Manufacturing in full swing!

Wow these last couple weeks have flown by! I’ve been in the shop most days for 10hrs+ at a time working on cutting and prepping the inserts. All of the parts are now at both sewing houses and it is a race to see who finishes the job first. As soon as one finishes, I will have enough stock to send out to all the kickstarter backers.

This is my little biodiesel hatchback bringing one part of the materials to the sewing houses for the final manufacturing.

It does look like there will be a delay due to the christmas season rush at both sewing houses in completing the work. They did give me assurances that a good portion of the desks will be done by the end of November beginning of December. As soon as they are done I have all of the other parts ready for assembly and shipping!

Earlybird Desks and Magnets are all out in the hands of backers! We are in the process of drafting the instructions so please send me directly any feedback you have about any difficulties in setting your desks up the first time! International backers, how was the extra assembly step you had to do?

I am excited to hear any and all feedback and am looking forward to getting the rest of the desks out to backers!

Thanks again for helping make the Ninja Standing Desk a reality!

P.S. If you didn’t get a chance to pledge for a desk but would still like to pre-order one we are now accepting Pre-Orders.

Ninja’s get their shot on TV!

We’re on TV!

On Tuesday we will be on GizWiz live demonstrating the Ninja Standing Desk! You can watch Live Online at Twit.tv at around 1pm PDT on Tuesday Sept 4th.

Upgraded Cases:

This last week has been the week of arriving supplies. 300 yards of fabric is heavy! It arrived on a pallet, 6 rolls each weighing 50lbs. The arrival was another “Oh my goodness!” moments in this process, both inspiring and intimidating.

I am currently surrounded by 12 boxes of cases for the Ninja Standing Desk, all screen printed with our logo.

Ninja Standing Desk Case

Originally we had planned just a very simple cloth bag as a case. This case is made of strong denier nylon and has room for 2 or 3 shelf desks. I’ve been using it as a laptop case with my laptop in between the two shelves, providing protection for my laptop, and everything I need on the go right in one bag!

Logos:

We have been working on upgrading our professional image and logo as you may have seen with our recent website update at NinjaStandingDesk.com

I am running a design contest at 99designs.com to have another take on our logo. Once we get the finalists in I’ll open up a survey for all of you to give your thoughts on what logos you like the best. Until then check out the design contest: http://99d.me/c/3hap

Happy Ninja Labor Day!

Thanks and I hope your Labor Day weekend is Ninja-riffic!

Full Steam Ahead! The tracks look clear…

Today I read an interesting article: Kickstarter’s Funded Projects See Some Stumbles

It casts a negative light on all of us here doing Kickstarter projects. While points in the article are valid, I think it doesn’t look at the bigger picture that most of the funded projects do deliver what they promise. Product delays are also not exclusive just to Kickstarter, large corporations have them too!

The challenge is that we entrepreneurs are sometimes idealistic, and often naive. That is in fact what makes us so good at it! We push forward not always knowing the answer, but with a belief the problem is solvable. We don’t let the fear of failure stop us and we let our ideas and passion drive us. What’s challenging is that most of us have never run a business like the one we are proposing to start on Kickstarter. The learning curve is intense!

My goal before I even launched the Kickstarter was to create a very small production run of Ninja Standing Desks as a test run. I thought I would be done by the beginning of Kickstarter and have them up in offices, co-working spaces, and in the hands of reporters. That was my first delay! Those are now my early-bird desks and are still nearing completion as we speak.

Luckily nothing went wrong, it just took my support pole manufacturer 2 weeks extra to even start on my order, and a 6-8 week lead time to finish. The poles should be shipped friday. I have had 3 sets of samples from bag manufacturers delivered, the last and hopefully final sample arriving tomorrow. I expected to have the cases for the desks done a couple weeks ago.

The thing that delays projects more than anything else I’ve found, is that we have no control over how fast other people work. It sometimes takes days or weeks to even get an important call back from crucial suppliers. If you want something made in the USA, suppliers are often SLOW.. Even when you have a rapid supplier/manufacturer, shipping and coordinating from one step in the process to the next always takes more time than anticipated.

Through a lot of help, advice, collaboration, and mentorship, I launched the Ninja Standing Desk Project. I’ve already manufactured the first small run of desks and worked out the logistics for my larger production run. Overall even with delays I am still on schedule for my first early-bird desk delivery in September, and in great shape for the November deadline.

Thank you for believing in this project. I can’t promise to know if there will be future delays, but I can promise to keep you updated and work hard to deliver the vision of the Ninja Standing Desk you invested in!

Us Kickstarter-preneurs are thankful you have invested in us rather than the typical mega-corporation product. It’s through your support we are building businesses, creating jobs, and innovating!
